Unlike conventional treatments, gene therapy has the potential to be a one-time treatment that targets the underlying cause of a disease and may have a curative effect, significantly improving patients’ quality of life. Yet after decades of trials, it’s only been in the last five years that gene therapy has become a truly viable approach to treating human disease. Although still in its nascent days, we expect it to grow rapidly in the coming decade, ushering in a new era of treatments.
